Sun 'n Fun

Lakeland Linder Regional Airport, Lakeland FL
13-18 APRIL, 2010
( Additional information will become available as it is released)

MISSION:

SUN ‘n FUN is the 2nd largest fly-in, air show, industry tradeshow, and aviation event in the nation – and it’s right here in Lakeland Florida. The size of this event requires hundreds of volunteers, and that’s where CAP comes in to help make it the popular and successful show that it is. While the SUN 'n FUN event is open to the public April 13-18, CAP volunteers are needed on the ground April 9-19 to support all the activities.

The CAP partnership with SUN ‘n FUN is a perfect fit with all three core components of the CAP mission. CAP provides Emergency Service support with a precautionary mission from Air Force Rescue Coordination Center. Aerospace education is abundant in the hundreds of seminars and aerospace related vendors, and cadets are welcome to participate in the many volunteer roles needed for a show of this size.

With more than 5,000 aircraft on the ground to view and enjoy, there’s also the probability that more than a few ELTs will accidently be activated and need to be located, documented, and turned off. With more than 40,000 take offs and landings, there are plenty of pilots forgetting to close a flight plan or landing without a flight plan who forget to phone home, so CAP logging efforts are invaluable to the FAA in determining whether an aircraft might be overdue or just parked somewhere on the vast SUN ‘n FUN grounds, and CAP members have a front row seat to every take off and landing on the field while recording all those tail numbers.

SUN ‘n FUN attracts more than 160,000 aviation minded people from around the world, so it’s an ideal location to make CAP’s presence seen, heard, and known. The CAP Corporate activities require members to man recruiting booths, assist the FAA, AOPA, and other organizations, help protect aircraft and vendors’ areas with crowd control functions, demonstrate Cadet Program activities, and maybe even be Cadet Ken for the DDR exhibit.

CAP bases operations out of the National Guard Armory on the airport grounds with free accommodations for members working more than a day and a great place to meet new CAP members from around the Wing. Volunteer shifts are scheduled so everyone has an opportunity to see plenty of exhibits, aircraft, and shows, as well as meet other aviation enthusiasts from around the globe.
